THE PLAY
What does a woman do when the only man she wants to marry won't have her, even when the king commands it? In All's Well that Ends Well, Shakespeare's fascinating, problematic romance, he pits the wise and witty woman doctor Helena against the haughty, hotheaded courtier Bertram in a clash of wills filled with comic surprises and gems of passionate poetry

THE ARTISTS
Darko Tresnjak, Artistic Director, The Old Globe Shakespeare Festival, San Diego, is a remarkable young American artist. His productions of Pericles, (San Diego Critics Circle Award, 2002) The Winter's Tale and Antony and Cleopatra have been acclaimed for their humanity, attention to language and visual beauty. His work has been presented regionally at the Williamstown Theater Festival, the Huntington Theater, the Long Wharf Theater and the New York Shakespeare Festival.

THE PRODUCTION
In contrast to the "original practices" employed in John Dove's Measure for Measure, Tresnjak's production has a company of men and women, is designed for the intimate, 199-seat Duke Theatre, utilizes psychological characterization and theatre conventions of today. Tresnjak writes, "I believe that Helena's journey is that of rebirth and regeneration. The exploration of how an individual and a society move on and heal after great loss is perhaps the most timeless and timely theme in this play. It makes All's Well That Ends Well a play worth reviving and exploring."
