"To that small pantheon
of great contemporary stage directors, one must add Liviu
Ciulei. In common with Peter Brook, this Romanian director
is a true innovator."
- The New York Times

THE PLAY
Andorra, a 1961 drama by the distinguished
Swiss author Max Frisch, is the most produced modern play
in Germany. It focuses on anti-Semitism and the rise of fascism
in Europe, but is about what could happen anywhere and anytime.
According to The Times Literary Supplement,
"Frisch has demonstrated in Andorra the hollowness
of the smug slogan: 'It can't happen here.' The close-fisted
innkeeper, the churlish carpenter, the journeyman who considers
discretion the better part of valor, the vain doctor, the
lecherous soldier, and not least the clergyman, with his excess
of ill-directed good will, in their petty squabbles and jealousies
are all universal figures; insignificant enough individually,
they become dangerous (but how dangerous!) only when put under
collective pressure."

THE ARTISTS
The last major New York production of
Andorra was in 1963 on Broadway. Theatre for a New
Audience has commissioned a new translation from Michael Feingold,
chief drama critic of the Village Voice, to make the
language fresh, real and everyday to us.
Andorra will be directed by Liviu
Ciulei, an internationally established master director. He
was Artistic Director of Romania's Bulandra Theatre, the great
theatre of Bucharest, and the former Artistic Director of
America's Guthrie Theatre.

THE PRODUCTION
Ciulei's vision of Andorra is a
play of ideas whose power lies in its appeal to the audience's
emotions. The costumes are 1940's and the setting is the bright
white piazza of a town, but the production is not naturalistic.
As a secret is slowly revealed, the staging highlights the
emotional impact of the drama.
