Why Give?

There are so very many good reasons for giving to the Theatre for a New Audience Capital Campaign.

You can give because...

You already know and love Theatre for a New Audience and can’t wait for us to have our very own home.

You love our thought-provoking seasons of Shakespeare, classics and major contemporary plays, which cross-pollinate works of the past with what is most compelling in theatre now. Shakespeare, Molière, Wole Soyinka, Lope de Vega, Edward Bond and Adrienne Kennedy -- authors like these, old or new, illuminate our times.

You love the artists in our shows, artists who play for our wildly diverse audience, from avid theatregoers to young people. Some of the finest American actors like F. Murray Abraham, Kate Forbes, Byron Jennings, Harry Lennix, Stephen Spinella and John Turturro play characters like Shylock, Portia and Don Juan. Critics have acclaimed our productions and we’ve been honored with many awards.

You love that Theatre for a New Audience is committed to providing development opportunities to artists through training.

You love that Theatre for a New Audience has global connections. We have an on-going collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and have toured nationally and internationally... and played on Broadway.

You love Brooklyn and can't wait for a Hugh Hardy designed classical theatre complex to be a stone's throw away.

You love that we have the largest program introducing Shakespeare to New York City Public School children, that we serve more than 2,500 students each year and that we have served more than 117,000 students to date.

You love your community and are excited by the promise of the BAM Cultural District. Theatre for a New Audience, as a prominent feature of the District, will reach out to those who have few opportunities to go to the theatre.

You love Brooklyn and can’t wait for a uniquely designed classical theatre complex to be a stone’s throw away.

You love the Brooklyn arts scene and are delighted that this new building will bring two new performance/rehearsal spaces for others to use and that we will rent them out at affordable prices.

You love the environment and are elated that our home will be a sustainable building and that it will be the first one in the Cultural District, one of the first in Brooklyn and one of a very few Green theatres in the country.

There are so many more reasons, but we think this is a good start. You may have noticed that like all giving, our reasons all come down to love and how much a gift makes happen...Why are you giving? Send us an email and let us know: capitalcampaign@tfana.org

The Numbers and How To

Including an endowment, Theatre for a New Audience needs to raise $56 million to see our project through. So far we have raised more than $46 million, or 82% of our total goal. This is terrific! But, we still need your help with the remaining 18%, or $10 million.

Avenues for Giving

The Groundbreakers Campaign: Early support is crucial to a capital campaign and is sometimes the hardest support to get. A gift of $25,000 or more by December 31, 2009, gets you recognition as a Groundbreaker in the lobby of our new home and our thanks for supporting us from the very beginning.

An unrestricted gift to the Campaign: capital campaigns are not just about bricks and mortar; there are also the costs of design of the building, planning for sustainability, organizational transition, fundraising and promotional materials, to name a few. An unrestricted gift ensures that we are able to cover all costs associated with getting our fabulous new home into the ground, up and running smoothly.

A gift to the Endowment: By providing a dependable revenue stream, the Endowment assures, over time, that we have adequate capital to maintain and expand our production capacity, education programs and artists training, as well as manage the operational upkeep of the building. The Endowment is essential to ensuring the long term sustainability of the institution and to protecting this asset for generations to come.

A Naming gift: Naming is a wonderful opportunity to be recognized in perpetuity for your generous support... we can’t think of a better way to say “thank you!” Our building has several exciting opportunities: The building, itself, the grand staircase, the Main Stage lobby, the rehearsal space, the Green Room and the Catwalk, to name a few. If you are interested in naming opportunities, please contact us.

As with the reasons for giving, there are also many options for giving. You can give a gift of any size and it will make a difference. Here are a few ways to give:

“I’ll bet any money that if Theatre for a New Audience were visiting us from England, our entire town would be at its feet, as sure as day follows night.”
