"Brooklyn is experiencing a rebirth. Its changing demographic, led by a young, well educated, diverse cohort, is infusing new vigor into the community and is rapidly changing its cultural landscape. The City’s political and social leaders have responded by endorsing a bold new project of cultural development: the BAM Cultural District. The District contemplates the assemblage of artistic organizations in integrated, street friendly architecture, centered on the venerable and respected Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Theatre for a New Audience, one of New York’s and the country’s most recognized producers of Shakespeare and classical plays, has preformed for years to a growing audience, but without a permanent home. As its recognition has expanded and become world wide, this lack of home has become an impediment to growth and has imposed limits on the artistic freedom required for proper interpretation of its classical offerings.
What could be a better pairing of interests? In 2008 Theatre for a New Audience will break ground on a state of the art facility offering directors and actors a supple space that can be conformed to the need of the plays performed. The theatre will be housed in an environmentally sustainable building designed collaboratively by Frank Gehry and Hugh Hardy. Its transparent façade and street friendly construction will serve as a welcoming new landmark for the Cultural District – a fitting marriage of two visionary needs." - Ted Rogers

"Theater for a New Audience set the stage for some of my earliest encounters with Shakespeare. Under the auspices of Jeffrey Horowitz and this courageous company committed to vigorously engaging the theatrical cannon, I directed such greats as Titus, Prospero and Kate with a free reign- the essential ingredient for an emerging director. Elliot was able to develop his own composer's voice creating music for extraordinary texts.
A theater is known not only by its outstanding productions, but also by its home- a sure footing in time and space. Theater for a New Audience deserves a bold and sophisticated home to match its unique mission. Frank Gehry and Hugh Hardy's design for this stunning new theater is simple and liberating; its purpose and value clear. That's why Elliot Goldenthal and I are on board for this important project. I hope you will join us." - Julie Taymor

"I feel honored to be part of this unique opportunity: I'm helping to build an architecturally stunning theater that's devoted to making Shakespeare and the classics relevant to contemporary audiences, and we're doing it in the most exciting and dynamic area of New York City right now -- in downtown Brooklyn. It's an amazing opportunity to be part of the creation of the second world-class arts center in the City of New York. Please join me by supporting Theatre for a New Audience and our home in the BAM Cultural District."

"I am a lifelong New Yorker and have witnessed two great transformations that involved the Arts. The first was in the 1960's and took place on the West Side when Lincoln Center was developed. The second was the early development and transformation of SoHo in the 1970's. Now there is a third transformation going on all over Brooklyn, especially in the new BAM Cultural District.
Our theater building will be the first new structure of this transformation. It will be a great resource for Brooklyn and the rest of New York. Everything about Theatre for a New Audience and the new building is done to the highest standards: from the building's architecture to the Theatre's productions and education programs. I have attended rehearsals and previews of several plays and am simply awed by the level of research work that goes into these productions. My wife and I have made many trips to London and almost always attend at least one Royal Shakespeare Company production during each visit. In our opinion Theatre for a New Audience is creating the same high quality work with young American actors and directors. I am very proud to be associated with this project."
