"Who's There?" Hamlet

Theatre for a New Audience. That's who. Who are we?

We’re the only American theatre to be invited not once, but twice to bring our productions of Shakespeare to Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company.

What’s our mission? To vitalize and develop the performance and study of Shakespeare and classic drama.

How do we fulfill it?

F. Murray Abraham in
THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
Founded in 1979 by Jeffrey Horowitz, our seasons - always based on thought-provoking themes - present Shakespeare side by side with neglected classics and significant contemporary plays, uncovering how these works illuminate our time. Our productions are complemented by The Literary Supplement. Curated by Michael Feingold, Village Voice Drama Critic, these are staged readings of other invigorating plays which explore each season’s theme.

We play for a wildly diverse audience from avid theatre-goers to young people. We’re passionate about education and offer the largest arts-in-education programs in the New York City Public Schools to introduce Shakespeare and the classics, as well as TFANATALKS - stimulating discussions between our audiences and scholars and artists.

We are not a fixed ensemble, but have ongoing associations with some of the finest artists to be found on American stages -- artists who helped us win all our TONY®, Obie, Drama Desk and Lortel awards and nominations.

We offer up-and coming artists unique opportunities to develop their distinctiveness. Mentors, such as Cicely Berry, the internationally recognized Director of Voice of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and Robert Neff Williams, Voice and Text consultant of the Juilliard School, lead workshops for actors and directors.

Our productions play to a culturally and economically diverse audience. Our New Deal ticket-- 10 bucks – is the lowest price reserved-seat ticket in New York for people 25 and under.

"Theatre for a New Audience is one of America's most admirable and exciting theatre companies... some of the best acted and directed work to be found on American stages, which continually engages with the canon of world dramatic literature in vigorous ways."

-Tony Kushner, American Playwright
