THE PLAY
In Measure for Measure, love and lust, justice and mercy, purity and villainy all lock horns in Shakespeare's famously troubling comedy of a man sentenced to death and his sister, a nun, who can only save his life at the cost of her virtue.
THE ARTISTS
The acclaimed Olivier Awarding-winning actor and Globe Artistic Director, Mark Rylance, is featured as the Duke Vincentio. Mr. Rylance has an ongoing relationship with Theatre for a New Audience having performed in Henry V, As You Like It and The Two Gentlemen of Verona with our Theatre. Measure for Measure is Rylance's swan song. After serving for 10 years, he is retiring as the Globe's Artistic Director.
THE PRODUCTION
Theatre for a New Audience and Arts at St. Ann's in association with 2Luck Concepts team up to present The New York premiere of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre of London's production of Measure for Measure. It comes to St. Ann's Warehouse after an eight-week U.S. national tour.
Acclaimed in London in 2004, this signature production from London's Shakespeare's Globe Theatre employs "original practices" -- creatively employing in the 21st century the artistic conventions Shakespeare used. Going back to basics and playing on a bare stage with an all-male cast, the Elizabethan production brings out the text's darkness and humor with great energy, employs period music and clothing and has lively interaction with the audience.
