Support for theatre artists’ ongoing professional development is an essential part of the Theatre for a New Audience mission. TFANA administers several programs, fully subsidized by the Theatre, that nurture and support American theater professionals. The programs also allow Theatre for a New Audience to collaborate with promising artists as they create exciting works of theatre.

AMERICAN DIRECTORS PROJECT

The American Directors Project (ADP) was established in 1997 to promote the development of American directors of Shakespeare. In particular, ADP seeks to develop directors’ sensibility for Shakespeare’s language and enhance their understanding of how actors can bring Shakespeare's text to life. Each season, TFANA invites six to eight young to mid-career directors to work with Cicely Berry, Director of Voice, Royal Shakespeare Company, and a company of actors. ADP has become a highly valued program in the field in which artists develop skills by working with Berry, one of the finest masters of Shakespeare’s language. ADP participants are among the most promising artists working today. Karin Coonrod, Scott Ellis, and Bartlett Sher are among the 24 directors who have participated to date, and Blair Brown, Victor Garber, and Ron Rifkin are among the 63 actors who have participated.

This program is not being offered this year.

ROBERT WILLIAMS WORKSHOP

Each summer at TFANA, Robert Neff Williams, distinguished teacher of voice technique at the Juilliard School, leads a three-week workshop focusing on performance approaches to works by classical playwrights other than Shakespeare. Fifteen actors are invited to participate in the workshop each year. In the summer of 2002, the Workshop will focus on developing an American style for the wit and humanity of Molière. Past Williams Workshops have explored performance techniques with Restoration drama.
