In 1986, Jeffrey Horowitz invited Julie Taymor to direct her first Shakespeare play, The Tempest, for Theatre for a New Audience. In December 2010, her film adaptation of The Tempest starring Helen Mirren will open in theatres.
On Sunday, October 17, supporters and friends of the Theatre gathered at BAM Rose Cinemas for an exclusive pre-release screening of the film, followed by a discussion with Jeffrey, Julie, and Elliot Goldenthal, who composed the scores in both the Theatre’s production and the film. Following the discussion, cocktails and dinner were served in BAM’s elegant Lepercq Space.
The event raised funds for the Theatre’s Capital Campaign, which has raised more than 82% of the Campaign goal to build the Theatre’s first permanent home, a 27,500 square-foot “green” building designed by Hugh Hardy, in the BAM Cultural District. Groundbreaking is planned for this winter! Located on Ashland Place between Fulton Street and Lafayette Avenue, it will be a center for Shakespeare and classic drama in the New York area.
