This is the play’s first Broadway revival since its Broadway premiere in 1961 that starred Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Alan Alda, Godfrey Cambridge, Sorrell Booke and Beah Richards.

Purlie Victorious is based on Ossie Davis’s experiences growing up in Georgia under Jim Crow. The play’s enduring significance lies in its use of humor and art to address societal disparities and challenge oppressive authority while entertaining, epitomizing Ossie Davis’ profound impact on both the world of theatre and the fight for equality.

Proceeds from the benefit will support TFANA’s productions and its programs in the New York City Public Schools.

If you cannot join us for the benefit on October 12, please consider helping to make the event a success by making a gift of any size to support our annual fund with a gift of your choosing. All gifts support Theatre for a New Audience’s productions and programs, including arts in education programs in New York City Public Schools and creative development opportunities for artists.
