An essential part of Theatre for a New Audience’s mission is to support artists at every stage of their careers. We are very proud of the recognition at this year’s Tony Awards for artists whom we supported earlier in their careers.
—Donald Holder, who first worked with us in 1994 designing lighting for Titus Andronicus directed by Julie Taymor, and went on to design the lighting for many of our shows, won for Best Lighting Design of a Musical (South Pacific).
—Mark Rylance, who first worked with the Theatre in 1993 playing the title role in Shakespeare’s Henry V, and is a member of our Artistic Council, won for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play (Boeing-Boeing).
—Bartlett Sher, whose 2001 staging of Cymbeline for the Theatre became the first U.S. production of Shakespeare invited to the Royal Shakespeare Company, and who directed three other productions for us, won for Best Direction of a Musical (South Pacific).
—Julie Taymor first worked with Theatre for a New Audience in 1983 and is a member of our Artistic Council. The 2008 Tonys began with a performance from The Lion King for which Julie won the Tony for Best Director. This is The Lion King’s tenth anniversary on Broadway.
—Catherine Zuber, who first designed with us in 1987 when she did costumes for The Taming of the Shrew, and who has since designed costumes for many of our productions, won for Best Costume Design of a Musical (South Pacific).We hope you share our pride in seeing the outstanding achievements of these artists recognized!
